Charles Miess's Past Columns

 
Charles Miess has written columns for Maryland 20878®
and for Word Worth–World Magazine of Ideas and the Arts®.

One of his first columns on Word Worth, "A Journey into Darkness," was the recipient of the Apex Grand Award for Excellence in Writinga distinguished award indeed.  The Apex judges had this to say about Miess's column:
"What a beautiful story, riveting, with powerful imagery
and a warm, inviting style that draws you in and won't let you go. A marvelous example of wordcraft."

Miess won a second Apex Award for "The Robbery," a column that appeared in Word Worth in 2004, and a third Apex Award in 2006 for his 2005 Word Worth Column, "Something Borrowed." In 2007, Miess won an Apex Award for his column linked below, "Superlatives Grow as the Standards Go." He was also a contributor to the May 2006 issue of Word Worth which won an Apex Award for the entire issue.

In addition to his interest in writing, Miess is a Senior Reliability Engineer for an international air and space company.

that your idea is more likely to be expressed in a style that is bold and confident, rather than timid and hedging.

Examples:

  • Poor:    A decision must be made . . . 
  • Better: We must decide . . .

 

  • Poor:    Certification of the equipment will be initiated upon completion of the project.

  • Better: We will certify the equipment when we complete the project.

 

  • Poor:    It is my recommendation that we take action at the earliest possible time.

  • Better: I recommend we act immediately.

 

  • Poor:    An investigation of the problem will be conducted and a solution implemented.

  • Better: We will investigate and solve the problem.

 

  • Poor:    Implementation of the new dress code will take effect on January 1st.

  • Better: The new dress code will take effect on January 1st.
